This series comprises a nearly complete publishing run of The Lutheran Missionary from 1931-1954 when it was a publication of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) and its Mission Auxiliary. This monthly magazine contained news, mission field updates, missionary statistics, and personnel news related to the mission fields in which the ALC worked. Issues are in bound volumes by year and are in excellent condition. Volume numbers continue from when the magazine was published in the Iowa Synod. The majority of volumes have page numbering that is consecutive within each issue. The exception being volumes 13-16 which have page numbers that run consecutively through a volume and start over with the next volume. Issues from 1950-1954 are indexed alphabetically by subject matter. These printed looseleaf indexes are in box 4. Volume 22, 1942 is missing. In addition to paper records, the archives also has microfiche copies of issues from 1931-1944 and microfilm copies of issues from 1931-1932. Records are arranged chronologically.

The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church. The ALC met as a delegate body biennially in October, the time and place of which was determined by the president and Board of Trustees.
